September is here, and with it comes the promise of change. While the rest of the country starts slipping into sweaters, here in South Florida we welcome subtle shifts: cooler evenings, golden sunsets, and breezes that remind us hurricane season will soon be behind us. It officially ends on November 30, so for now we savor the anticipation of calmer days ahead.

For food lovers, September is all about transition. Across the country, autumn flavors like pumpkin, squash, apples, and warm spices take the spotlight. In Boca we add our own twist, pairing those cozy flavors with bright citrus, fresh seafood, and refreshing iced drinks that fit our Florida lifestyle. Think pumpkin spice cold brew, citrus-glazed fish, or apple cider inspired cocktails with a tropical kick.

Here at Savor Our City, September also marks the beginning of our biggest countdown yet: Boca Raton’s Centennial Celebration on December 6th. Each year, Delray Beach Restaurant Month serves up a delicious opportunity to explore the city's vibrant culinary scene—one bite, sip, and savory moment at a time. Dine Out Lauderdale, Greater Fort Lauderdale’s premier annual culinary celebration, is an annual two-month culinary celebration in Greater Fort Lauderdale, taking place from August 1 to September 30. During this period, participating restaurants offer specially priced, three-course prix fixe menus for lunch and dinner. Lunch menus are typically priced at $35, while dinner menus are available at $45, $60, or a luxe $75 option. This program is designed to showcase the diverse culinary scene of the region and attract both locals and visitors.

An Exclusive Evening with Hendrick’s Gin at Bourbon Steak

Jennifer and I attended a truly special event at Bourbon Steak Delray Beach, where Hendrick’s Gin took center stage in a celebration of the art of the classic Aviation cocktail.

The evening began with a warm welcome from Executive Chef Pablo Valencia, the General Manager,Emilio Dominguez and our Hendrick’s host Jenna. Guests were guided by the Lead Bartender in an interactive session on crafting the perfect Aviation — a delicate mix of gin, maraschino, crème de violette, and lemon. It was as educational as it was delicious, giving us a hands-on appreciation for one of the most elegant cocktails in history.

From there, the experience expanded into a curated tasting flight, paired with light bites thoughtfully prepared by Chef Pablo. We sampled three distinctive Hendrick’s expressions:

Hendrick’s Original – the iconic cucumber-and-rose classic.

Hendrick’s Oasium – a bright, citrusy new release evoking the spirit of an oasis.

Hendrick’s Grand Cabaret – a lush, limited-edition gin inspired by Parisian cabarets of the early 1900s, brimming with decadent stone fruit and floral notes. This one quickly became my favorite of the evening.
Located on the iconic Atlantic Avenue, just steps from Florida’s Best Beach, Bourbon Steak Delray is the city’s only location from Michelin-starred chef Michael Mina.

Bourbon Steak is known for its premium cuts of American beef, Kobe beef, and Wagyu, along with the freshest seafood and shellfish. Signature tableside presentations add a memorable touch to every dish.

Game Day Flavors: Cooking for Sports Season

September is the ultimate kickoff for sports fans. Football is back, baseball is heading into the playoffs, and soccer and hockey keep the energy going. For foodies, that means one thing: game day cooking.

From tailgate gatherings to living room watch parties, food is always at the center of the action. Think juicy sliders, saucy meatballs, dips loaded with flavor, and drinks that keep the crowd refreshed. In South Florida, we love putting our own spin on the classics by swapping heavy chili for a citrusy seafood dip, turning burgers into Cuban-style sliders, or upgrading meatballs with tangy red curry sauce like this recipe below that I fell in love with.

SHAPE-N-BAKE MEATBALLS

Turkey Meatballs in Coconut Curry Sauce

Ingredients
1 pound ground turkey
½ cup green onions, diced
1 tsp fresh garlic,  minced
1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
1 tablespoon red curry paste
1 tablespoon fish sauce
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg, beaten
1 tsp salt
Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ingredients
  3. Mix well until it forms into a uniform consistency. 
  4. Take 2 tablespoons of the turkey mixture at a time and roll into meatballs. 
  5. Transfer the meatballs onto a parchment-lined half sheet baking pan and lightly coat with some cooking oil spray to keep them from sticking.
  6. Bake  about 18-20 minutes. Set aside.

COCONUT CURRY SAUCE 
1 tablespoon canola oil
½ red bell pepper sliced
½ yellow onion sliced
1 tablespoon ginger
1 tablespoon red curry paste
1 13.5 ounce cans unsweetened coconut milk
1 tablespoon fish sauce or soy sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
chopped cilantro or basil, for garnish
Instructions:
  1. While the meatballs are baking, prepare the coconut curry sauce.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium high heat. 
  3. Add the onions and red bell pepper and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring often. 
  4. Stir in the ginger and and red curry paste and cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring often so the vegetables don't burn but become soft and fragrant.


  5. Add the coconut milk and add the brown sugar and fish sauce or soy sauce and stir to combine. 
  6. Cook for 5 minutes then add the meatballs to the sauce and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. 
  7. Taste for seasoning and if it needs more salt, add a dash or two more fish sauce or soy sauce. 
  8. Garnish with chopped cilantro or basil leaves and serve.

Cubanito
Flavor Play: Ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard on slider buns.
Game Plan: Layer ham, pulled pork, Swiss, and pickles on buns, brush with mustard-butter, and bake until melty.
Buffalo Blitz
Flavor Play: Shredded chicken tossed in buffalo sauce, blue cheese or ranch drizzle, and crisp lettuce.
Game Plan : Pile buffalo chicken onto slider buns, top with cheese and lettuce, then bake or broil lightly until warmed through.
French Kiss 
Flavor Play: Shredded chicken tossed in buffalo sauce, blue cheese or ranch drizzle, and crisp lettuce.
Game Plan: Pile buffalo chicken onto slider buns, top with cheese and lettuce, then bake or broil lightly until warmed through.
Aloha Kickoff
Flavor Play: 
Sweet rolls, ham or pulled pork, pineapple, Swiss or provolone, and teriyaki glaze.
Game Plan: Layer meat, cheese, and pineapple on Hawaiian rolls, drizzle with teriyaki sauce, cover with foil, and bake until gooey.

TOUCH-DOWN PUNCH RECIPE

Every great game day spread needs a signature drink, and Touchdown Punch is the ultimate crowd-pleaser. Mix up a big batch with citrus juice, pineapple, a splash of soda, and your favorite spirit or a nonalcoholic twist. Serve it in a large bowl or drink dispenser, garnish with orange slices and fresh mint, and let guests help themselves between plays. It’s easy to make ahead, looks festive, and keeps the energy high all game long.

Ingredients:

(Makes 10 servings)
1 (750-ml.) bottle Prosecco
1 cup vodka
1/4 cup blue Curaçao
1 liter Sprite
4 cup seltzer
3 cup ice
Any seasonal fruits you like for garnish!
Instructions:
Pour all ingredients in a large pitcher. Stir well and

A Community That Celebrates Together, Grows Together

Boca Raton’s centennial year has been nothing short of extraordinary. Since January, the city has marked its 100th milestone with events that honored the past, celebrated the present, and looked toward the future.

It all began with the official launch and unveiling of the centennial logo alongside a commemorative sculpture. The new Boca100.com website quickly became a hub for history, photos, and community stories. In May, crowds gathered for a Centennial Celebration Weekend, where a Weezer concert and a dazzling drone show over Mizner Park set the tone for innovation and spectacle.

Art and culture have shined throughout the year, with more than 1,000 submissions to the “Ode to Boca” poetry project, unique public art installations like Plastic Poetry, and a lineup of historical lectures, tours, and exhibits led by the Boca Raton Historical Society. Community spirit has flourished through monthly gatherings like Centennial Nights, Boca Lights, the launch of the annual Boca Street Fest, and even a city-inspired blonde ale, Centenni-Ale, brewed with pineapple by Prosperity Brewers and poured at more than 60 local spots.

But the centennial isn’t finished yet. In fact, the most delicious celebration is still to come.

On Saturday, December 6, 2025, Boca will round out its centennial year with Savor Boca, a Centennial Celebration is a two-part blow-out event in Downtown Boca. Guests will first dive into a team-based scavenger hunt full of puzzles, trivia, and hidden gems across the city. Then, the afternoon continues with a self-guided tasting tour at 10+ of Boca’s favorite restaurants, cafes, and bars. It’s the grand finale that ties together everything this year has stood for: food, fun, connection, and community pride.

As we close the book on Boca’s first 100 years, Savor Boca invites everyone to savor the century and step boldly into the next.

“I came across Savor Our City while trying to find a team building activity for a group of 20 co-workers at a sales meeting in Ft Lauderdale. Denise was immediately responsive and helpful. She made all the plans from transportation to activity to food and kept me informed along the way. She researched the company and used corporate facts and values in the scavenger hunt that she put together, even going so far as to buy the product to use during the event. On the night of the event, we were put into three teams and had an hour long scavenger hunt, which was perfect for breaking the ice and team building. Afterward, she set up a progressive walking dinner with reserved seating and preplanned menu and cocktails. This activity was one of the highlights of our trip. Everyone raved about the fun they had!
